Happy New Year darling PIMS reader!!! Welcome to a new year! This one has been in my drafts and I think it is time. As the new year has begun, this is an important question to ask. This may even be the year you discover and begin to USE your gifts…I really hope that you do!
If you are around or have been around Church, you would have heard about gifts or making the most of your gifts at some point. If you have been anywhere near Instagram, you may have heard the same. This post is for those who are asking, “what are my gifts?” Or “how do I even know I have ANY gifts”. If you did not know what your gifts were before today, my hope is that, after today, you will work that out and never have to stress yourself about discovering what you have been gifted it…and possibly how to use that gift.
Let’s start at the very beginning. I love clarity and if something is not entirely clear, I struggle. So I try to be as clear as possible so that I am not misunderstood because I do not like misunderstanding anything or anyone. I mean, who does?
What am I talking about when I talk about gifts?
By gifts, I am talking about that quality, skill or ability that God has given you. Yes, I believe that these gifts are God-given.
‘Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow’ – James 1:17 NLT
If you have heard the phrase, ‘gifted writer’ or ‘gifted musician’, you are in the right room. Your gift is that thing that you don’t think too much about or that thing you do not have to put in too much effort to be good at. It could be singing or something in the area of music, be it composing, learning and playing instruments etc.
It could even be grace in your ability to use words, whether written or spoken. Someone like Obama has been gifted with fine oratory ability. You may still need to work on your gift but what you will find is, even if you do work to improve your gift, you will not struggle as much as someone who has not been naturally gifted in that particular area.
Why do we have these gifts?
I believe that we have been given these gifts for two, maybe three reasons. Firstly, we have been given these gifts to fulfil the purpose God created us for. I tend to find that our gifts are closely linked to our purpose. Secondly, I believe we have these gifts to be able to help people, using our gifts, in various capacities – no matter how big or small. Thirdly, I believe that we have been given these gifts to expand the Kingdom of God. As a Christian, I strongly believe this one. Our gifts are for the people around us and to add to the above, a personal favourite and fourth reason is, I believe that our gifts are an act of worship to the One Who made us. A ‘give back’ if you like. It is our way of saying, “I see what You gave me, I will use it in the above ways as my way to say thank You to You and appreciate You using them”.
What are some types of gifts?
Again, I believe that apart from the gifts that involve the physical, there are also spiritual gifts. Gifts like wisdom, faith and discernment. For the full(er) list, please read 1 Corinthians 12:7-11. These gifts are given to us, for us to help one another which is why I believe that many people have numerous different gifts. Some are indeed more gifted than others but that is not the focus. The point is, every single human being, has been gifted with something. No matter how small or big your gift is, the fact is that you have a gift the world would benefit from if you discovered what that gift was and shared it!
How do I know what my gift might be?
There is something you do that people are always commenting positively about. Especially when to you, it is not a big deal because you ‘just do it‘. For me, I enjoy singing. I don’t have to think too much about a song to be able to sing it and sing it well. People are always assuming I am professionally trained while I have never had a vocal lesson in my life – I do sing in Church*.
*This does not mean that I should not try and improve/work on my voice. I really should and I will. Vocal lessons are on my to-do list!
Your gift is something you enjoy doing. Something that others find difficult but you do not. Rather, you thrive in it. It is light work for you. You are able to do it without too much of a struggle. An example would be writing for me. I noticed that people are always asking me to look at their essays, work etc…and I would. I did not take notice until one of the lovely older women in my life asked me to take a look at her work. I wondered why SHE was asking ME? She was at the top of her field, highly intelligent, articulate, why was she asking me? Then she said it. Writing was not one of her giftings. She is able to write (you do not become a medical Doctor if you cannot write) but she did not have a grace for the type of writing she wanted me to help with. This incident helped me understand (and appreciate) my gift.
Have you started thinking about what you may have overlooked? Are ideas and thoughts about your gifts flooding your mind? I sure hope so!
Take some time to look at your life. Pray. Write notes if it helps. Use the guide above and try to work out what your gift(s) is. When you find out, please, start using this gift. The world is waiting to be made better as it anticipates your God-given gift to brighten the place up!
When you work it out, please share what it is with me and how you will use it. I want to hear from you!
Pray with me…
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift you have given me. Help me use and develop my skills and giftings in all the ways You want me to. Show me how to bless and brighten the world around me. Guide me and lead the way as I begin to walk and thrive in my purpose and gifts. In Jesus name, Amen!
Love and Blessings,
