I have been thinking a lot about Hagar. She was Sarai’s maidservant and was forced to have a child for Abraham, then was kicked out for the very same reason.
The full story can be found in Genesis 16:1-16.
Hagar as an Egyptian probably had her own gods and would not have had much reason to serve the God of Abraham. Yet, when she was tossed out, disregarded, treated with contempt and disrespect (in my opinion), when she was abandoned, left with a child that was forced on her, with no practical way to care for her or her child, she met with God.
Hagar’s experience of God was in two-fold. The first encounter was after she ran away because her household was toxic and she could not take it any more. God asks her to go back and submit to Sarai. He also gives her instructions and assures her that He hears her. He validates her pain and makes sure that she knows she is not in this alone.
The second encounter was interesting because God did not tell her to go back this time. She had been cast out. She was alone, jobless, afraid, thirsty, probably hungry and God steps in to rescue her!
“Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord , who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.” She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?” – Genesis 16:13 NLT
Despite all these issues, her experience of God was one in which she felt seen and heard despite probably not acknowledging Him as her God.
It encourages me so much because it tells me that, whether you acknowledge Jesus as Lord or not, He still hears you. He sees you…He loves you! Jesus is described in the following way…
“This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin” – Hebrews 4:15 NLT
He really is the God Who hears and sees!
If you are reading this and may be wondering, does anyone see me? Can anyone hear me? Does anyone even care or love me? The answer to all of the above is a resounding YES!
“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is” – Ephesians 3:18 NLT
Pray with me?
Heavenly Father, thank you that You hear, see and love me. Help me to feel Your love like never before. I feel helpless right now but I know that You can help me. Please help me. Come to my rescue and turn my life around. I trust that You are able do so. In Jesus name, I have prayed, Amen!
Love and Blessings,
